Understanding the Bible: More Than Just a Holy Book
Many people view the Bible as something so sacred that they're afraid to interact with it. However, this perspective often leads to neglecting what's actually inside its pages.
What is the Bible Really?
The Bible isn't just one book - it's actually a library of 66 books containing history, poetry, songs, laws, letters, genealogies, sermons, eyewitness accounts, and prophecies. More importantly, it's not God Himself, but rather His inspired word meant to reveal Jesus to us.
Why Do We Often Misunderstand the Bible?
We often put the Bible on such a high pedestal that we treat it as an idol rather than a tool for knowing God. While we claim it's holy and sacred, many of us rarely read it or engage with its contents. It sits collecting dust while we prioritize our phones, remote controls, and other daily items.
How Does Jesus Connect to the Bible?
Jesus is the true Word of God - not the physical Bible itself. As John writes, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Every page of Scripture points to Jesus, and every story has the power to change our own story.
How Can We Better Engage with Scripture?
Three key approaches can help us better engage with the Bible:
- Share with curiosity
- Ask questions and look up answers together
- Consider how non-believers might understand passages
- Journal your questions and discoveries
- Share with authenticity
- Be real about your struggles and doubts
- Share how Scripture impacts your life
- Build trust through transparency
- Share the truth
- Focus on understanding Jesus through the Gospels
- Learn key verses that explain the Gospel
- Pray for wisdom to be Christ's ambassador
Life Application
This week, challenge yourself to:
- Start reading the Bible regularly, particularly focusing on the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John)
- Journal your questions and discoveries
- Share what you're learning with others authentically
Ask yourself:
- Am I treating the Bible as an idol or as a tool to know Jesus better?
- How much time do I spend engaging with Scripture compared to other daily activities?
- What questions do I have about the Bible that I've been afraid to ask?
- How can I be more authentic in sharing my faith journey with others?
